A Catalyst is an animal given divine power and insight. Most often referred to as an animal companion, a Catalyst has the power to confer the ability to cast spells upon one person, namely their Chosen. A Catalyst is looking for an individual with a concrete belief system whose main desire is compatible with the Catalyst's arena of operations.

Each Chosen has a destiny. This is the grand scheme to which they work towards. Some examples of a destiny are to return a certain people to power, to free a race held captive, to stabilize an unbalanced power (i.e. mages choking a region, a church grinding the populace, a plethora of ancient devices wreaking havoc). A Catalyst chooses their Chosen based upon the stated destiny of the individual.

While a destiny is on a grand scope, a goal is a specific object usually known only to the animal companion, or Catalyst. A Catalyst/Chosen pair will be given many goals each year and the Chosen may even accomplish some unbeknownst to themselves. This happens most often when the Catalyst guides a Chosen rather than partnering with them. Trust is often a hard thing to gain. A Catalyst/Chosen pair is most effective when working as a team of equals, but this is not always achievable.

A Catalyst will manifest as one of three types of animal: dog, horse, owl. This leads to three types of Chosen.
